Soul Sunday: D' Angelo - Voodoo

As much as I love the sounds of Lex Lugar beats and 9th Wonder production, sometimes you have to slow the tempo down and just vibe out. D' Angelo's 2nd album Voodoo is one of those albums you can just sit back and let the track list run through while your writing your procrastinated paper that's due on Monday, or if your just one of those people that likes to gut out a dutch and zone on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Either way it's a good mellow mood album to listen to. Most of the production is done by D'Angelo with guest production by Primo, Dilla, Questlove and Raphael Saadiq. Not to mention the album made Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums of all time. If you haven't already taken a listen to this classic, I highly recommend you do. Notable tracks: "Devil's Pie", "Untitled (How Does It Feel)"

Update:  Voodoo Outtakes and Extras. D'Angelo covers Roy Ayers' soul track "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", and also vibes out to Gang Starr's "Ex Girl to Next Girl". In addition, his hip-hop production, which was heavily influenced by fellow Soulquarian Jay Dee, is featured with the tracks "Pete Rock Beat" and "Marvine". The acoustic versions of "Spanish Joint" and "Africa" also appear on Outtakes. Definitely worth a listen.

Bonus: D'Angelo also produced the smooth Slum Village classic "Tell Me" (Co-production credited to Jay Dee) , from their classic album Fantastic Vol. 2. It can also be found on the 10th Anniversary updated release, 2.10.

Curren$y - Pilot Talk II

It's taken me awhile to analyze and do this review because I've gave Pilot Talk II numerous listens, At first I had mixed reviews but bottom line is Curren$y's career might be coming to a closer. Even though he has one of hip hop's legendary producers Ski Beatz (who's produced Jay-Z - Dead Presidents, Feelin it and various Camp Lo tracks) Ski still can't save the same sounding sleeping voice of Curren$y. Unlike his first Pilot Talk album you don't see alot of big name featured artist on this LP besides Raekwon the Chef, I was kind of stomped to see Spitta rush this album, after all its only been a five month differences between Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II. Maybe he was going for the same idea that DMX was to release two albums in one year(It's Dark and Hell is Hot, Flesh of my Blood). Only differences is Curren$y isnt going 7X platinum like X did within one year off two albums, matter fact he hasn't even went Gold with both numbers added up for album sales. The best track on this album was Famous which was release previously a year ago. At least the album cover is dope.
