Throwback Thrusday: Jean Grae - Jeanius

Like the Phoenix from which she derives her name, Jean Grae rises once again beautiful but fully capable of delivering a scorcher. She has great delivery combined with a witty writing style, but Jean truly stands out from the pack because of her versatility. While 9th Wonder hands her one smooth, soulful headnodder after another (with the exception of the anthemic intro and ‘Think About It,’ and the rougher album closing posse cut ‘Smashmouth’), Jean rips venomous braggadocio raps that are intelligent and vicious, but she also gets really personal, opening up about abortion on ‘My Story,’ life struggles on ‘The Time is Now,’ label interference on ‘This World,’ and a hot and heavy sex rap that will make whorish sailors blush on ‘Love Thirst.’ Whether guy or girl, there’s a little something for everyone on Jeanius, and 9th Wonder’s production brings out just the right mood for it all.

I also dig the artwork Jean & 9th put together for the album. Showing honor to Hip Hop classic albums
